What’s new at MOSI:
Tampa Bay’s beloved science center, MOSI, is celebrating more than 60 years in the community. To keep up with the times, the center is renovating and adding some amazing temps new exhibits.
But it doesn’t end there for them. As Tampa Bay expands, so does MOSI, which has ambitious plans for the museum.
several structures that have long held the title of tallest building in the world.
Wonders of the World, a new temporary exhibition, presents the world’s largest buildings and structures at a scale of 1:164. Artist Stan Munro, founder of Toothpick World, made them all entirely from toothpicks and glue. He even temps Bay populated some of his buildings with people made from toothpicks.
“In my opinion, you don’t get scale unless you get little people in there,” and at Toothpick World, the people are 1:64. Therefore, it simply transforms you in a way that looking at your phone cannot. “It’s kind of a fun medium, but not as good as seeing it in person,” Murno told us.
Kids can connect with Munro and learn how to make their own toothpick structures at home by scanning the QR codes on display. Be sure to look around the museum where you will find all his creations laid out.
New exhibit at MUSI:
In addition, this exhibit is accompanied by interactive engineering challenges throughout the museum.
Along the way, MOSI’s new putt putt course reveals some interesting science facts.
On the lawn next to the pitch and ropes course is this science-themed nine-hole putt putt course.
You’ll discover something completely new on every hole, like the fact that golf temps was the first sport played on the moon on hole 5! It makes sense that you have to put your ball under the rover.
Butterly Nursery and the Zydeco Mix Werks expansion:
The open air area is now a really exciting space with Sky Ropes, climbing frames and a new putting course, and it’s going to be super energizing! The new butterfly garden will move right next to the rope park. As Zydeco in Ybor expands to MOSI, you’ll soon be able to enjoy full-service dining not too far away.
NEW Drone Zone:
To fly a drone in this recently added exhibition space near the Idea Zone. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you can test your skills by piloting the drone through an obstacle course.
You can grab a bite to eat at MOSI Marketplace while we wait for the new Zydeco restaurant to be built, whether it’s a sandwich or salad, ice cream or even a hot meal from a futuristic hot vending machine!

Redesigned Mission Moon Base:
The redesigned Mission Moon Base is now Temps Bay even more exciting as human plan to return to the moon. When you enter the exhibit, you feel as if you are actually traveling to a future moon base from Earth.
While waiting, there is a countdown on the screen and the door opens by itself every three to four minutes. As you enter, the door closes behind you and you hurtle toward the moon. According to John Graydon Smith, CEO of MOSI, “you spend about 90 seconds in orbit to get to the moon, where they tell you all the challenges you’re going to face. Once you land, another door opens and you’re on the moon base, going to explore.”
Not too far off for Mission Moonbase are significantly more remakes. Plus, since NASA intends to send humans back to the moon, the timing is perfect.
Smith elaborated:
“When it was created, the idea with Mission Moonbase – we’re in the future and the moon has been colonized, so people are inhabiting the moon to mine minerals, collect solar energy and do all sorts of things to help life on Earth and also make it sustainable on the moon and use it as a starting point for a mission to Mars.” Similar to what is happening in real life right now!
What awaits MOSI:
“We hope to announce plans sometime in 2023 to take back the former IMAX building and turn it into the largest planetarium in the state of Florida,” says Graydon. “All the new and redesigned additions are exciting.” There’s more to it. MOSI expands to include Tampa.
