Have you ever wanted to try an apple pie made from scratch? Did you know that making a pie from scratch is very easy? Here are all the steps you need to take to make an apple pie.
1. Get the dough ready
The recipe I use makes two of these small tarts (with a little more). I used the leftovers to make another pie, so I ended up with five small pies. For the dough, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, and about 2/3 of a cup of lard, vegetable fat, or margarine in a bowl. Cut the lard into small pieces and mix it with your hands into the flour until the mixture is no longer powdery. Now it’s time to slowly pour in the very cold water. To do this, just use a fork to pour a little bit of water over some flour. Use the fork to knead this small piece of dough.
After you’ve worked the dough, put it aside and add a little water to the dry part. Mix everything together and add a little water until it becomes a wet dough. When you can knead the dough and it stays together, it’s ready. Now make a ball out of the dough and tear it in half. If it stays together, there is enough water in the dough and it can be used. Put it in the fridge for a little while. If you want to make a lot of pies, you should make more dough.
2. Get the filling ready.
The easiest part of the recipe is making the filling. Peel and core the apples, then cut them into slices. Mix three-quarters of a cup of sugar and two to three teaspoons of cinnamon (add or take away to taste!) in a bowl. Â Mix well after adding a pinch of salt. Some of this dry mixture should be put on the bottom of the cake before the filling is added. About 2 tablespoons should be enough for each cake. Then melt three tablespoons of butter. Mix it into the dry ingredients. Put the apples in and cover them. The cake can now be topped with the filling.
3. Get the dough out!
This is one of the hardest things to do when you are making a cake. If done right, the batter should have a flaky texture. This is good because it makes the cake taste better, but bad because it makes it hard to stretch the dough. Work on a floured surface that is flat. Put half a ball of dough on a surface you can work on. Pat the dough down a bit, and then get the rolling pin ready (dust the rolling pin with flour so it doesn’t stick, that’s not good!) Then, think about putting it out SINGLE. Stretch in one direction, lift the rolling pin, roll it down, and then stretch again in the opposite direction.
If you roll too quickly back and forth, the dough will stick to the rolling pin and tear. If you press too hard with the rolling pin, the dough will stick to the table. Make the dough thin, but not too thin. Roll it out more and more until it is roughly stretched. You can figure out how much dough you need by putting the pan upside down in the middle of the dough and seeing if it goes 1.5 cm past the edge.
4. Put the cake together
Use a rolling pin to pick up the dough and put it on the baking sheet. Then, put the dough in the pan gently and lift the edges. Press down on the pan’s edges to get rid of any dough that sticks out. Now that you have your first cake pan, remember the dry filling you set aside? Take one or two tablespoons and sprinkle them on the bottom of the cake pan. Fill it with apple filling, and if you want, drizzle it with more butter. Make the top layer with the second round of dough. Before you put the top pastry on, moisten the edges where the bottom shells meet so they stick together better. Now put the top crust on the pie and staple the edges together. Rip off any extra dough.
5. Don’t mess it up!
Before you bake the cake, you need to make holes in the dough or prick it with a fork a few times. You can also use a fork to make the edge of the cake look better.
6. Let’s Bake a Cake!
Set the oven temperature to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and wrap the cake in foil to keep the top pan from getting too hot and burning. After 20 minutes, you should be able to take off the foil and the shell should be a golden brown color. Then bake it for at least 10–15 minutes more, and it’s ready to serve. Dutch apple pie is warm.
